We’re planting out – last frost date has passed

The weather this spring has been so crazy with extended cold snaps, snow and so much rain that the garden is really looking a bit drab and is definitely the spring buzz I was hoping for. I won’t lie, it’s all starting to get to me and I desperately want to go out there, with a coffee on my work breaks, and see colour and hear the bees and the birds. Desperately…

So I am taking heart in the fact that we have passed our last frost date here (was the 18th may) and I’m going to get some planting out done in the garden. A chance to clear some of the flowers from the greenhouse, which I have grown and brought on and a wee trip out to Pentland Plants (our preferred garden centre) to pick up a few wee extras. After, I came out the house in the morning and the sun was out, it was warm and I even contemplated shorts.

I’ve got a pile of lovely things in the greenhouse to go out, but as usual for the hanging baskets I’ve got a selection of petunias and also some pansies and violas and sweet williams because we’ve learned over the last couple of years just how reliable those are. Sweet williams and violas particularly will withstand even sucky weather and just keep flowering. Perfect.

Between the treasure trove in the greenhouse and the wee trip to the garden centre, I had quite a haul… enough for 10 baskets, 4 hanging pots and two big planter pots 😀

But as usual, the weather wasn’t quite as settled as it led me to believe and right in the middle of planting up we got a downpour. It chucked it down – quite spectacularly.
