An August pepper update from the greenhouse

I’m going to blow the suspense by making the intro to this paragraph the conclusion you are all waiting on. The new variety of peppers I’m growing, “King of the North” is a romping success. There I said it. So you may not want to join us in the greenhouse this week as we talk about them but hey ho. I’m just too excited to keep it secret.

This year there were a few major changes regarding our growing that have really made an impact, and the pepper variety was just one. So we started the sowing and growing process much earlier than other years, back in January. Meaning our plants have had a good 3 months more growing time than usual by this time of year and also the change of variety to a pepper much more suited to our climate. The outcome, an absolute bumper crop of peppers and some huge plants.

The thing that stands out though is that we are already seeing a fair amount of ripe fruit from our plants whereas we’re being told daily that other folk haven’t had a single ripe pepper yet. So this week, as well as a wee update on our plants in our greenhouse, I thought it would be good to chat about what affects ripening, the difference between ripe and mature and some tips to help your plant ripen those fruits.
